BYU Drug Free School Policy

In accordance with Federal requirements, BYU reviews its Drug Free School and Drug Free Workplace Policies and Substance Abuse Prevention Program biennially and provides recommendations to leadership to better serve students dealing with substance abuse issues. Students who would like assistance with drug or alcohol abuse can contact Substance Abuse Prevention Services at (801) 422-1942 or via email at saps@byu.edu for assistance and referral to outside resources.

On-Campus Resources

While use of these substances is not permitted, there are confidential resources available to students to help address drug or alcohol abuse: Counseling and Psychological Services, Substance Abuse Prevention Services, and Women's Services & Resources.

CAPS and SAPS

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Substance Abuse Prevention Services (SAPS) provide:
  • Confidential visits at no cost
  • Specific evaluation services for substance abuse
  • Help with changing current substance abuse patterns
  • Assistance with maintaining recovery from addiction
  • Biofeedback and stress management services
  • Referrals to additional off-campus resources

Women's Services & Resources

Women's Services & Resources provide:
  • Designated confidential reporting area for both men and women. The report is absolutely confidential unless there is an immediate health or safety risk.
  • A setting for listening to students and connecting them with appropriate resources
  • Events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities

FAQs

  • Yes. You are required to follow the Honor Code on and off campus.

  • No. The services provided through the university are confidential. No one, including parents, have a right to know if you are using these resources or what you disclose to them. There are legal exceptions to this policy: reports of child or elderly abuse, and threats to hurt yourself or someone else.

  • Being a victim of sexual misconduct is never a violation of the Honor Code.

    BYU has amnesty, leniency, and confidentiality policies in place that protects victims or witnesses of sexual harassment from disciplinary action by the Honor Code Office. See Title IX's Frequently Asked Questions for more information about what these policies mean.
