Digital BYU ID QR Code

BYU incorporated QR codes on the BYU App’s digital ID cards starting in Fall of 2023. These QR codes will simplify student participation in many Office of Belonging and Student Life events by allowing students to easily scan in. The data collected will be used to enhance events, activities, and services that meet the needs of all BYU students. For more information, visit eventattendance.byu.edu.

Similar methods of data collection about student participation in events and activities are common on most college campuses. The data is used to help leaders make decisions about activities, events, services, marketing, and in guiding organizational strategy.

If you have questions or concerns, please email deanofstudents@byu.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The QR code functionality and accompanying data sharing agreement has limited scope and purpose. If you would like to use the QR code to gather data for your program, please consult with the Office of General Counsel to ensure that your use is appropriate and covered under the current agreement. The Office of Student Life and the Office of Information Technology cannot grant permission for alternative uses of the QR code.

  • The QR codes are intended to help BYU leadership better understand student use of campus activities and services. Many students do not carry their physical cards which has made using card scanners impractical; however, most students carry their phones and have access to the BYU App.

  • When an Office of Belonging or Student Life event uses the QR code, event organizers will ask you to show your QR code.

  • Student life and Office of Belonging employees will be able to view the data. All employees who work with the data will be FERPA trained and be required to keep information private.

  • The data will be used for program improvement purposes. The university wants to ensure services are being provided to students from across campus. With additional insights about who is and who is not participating, additional research may be conducted to determine what opportunities these students may want.

  • No. The QR code is not connected to any of your financial resources.
